Born in Belgrade, Serbia in 1970, Roksanda Ilinčić grew up with a deep interest in the arts, gravitating first towards architecture and design, a foundation that would shape everything she made thereafter. She studied Architecture and Applied Arts at the University of Belgrade before moving to London to complete an MA in Womenswear at Central Saint Martins.
Her eponymous label launched in London to critical acclaim in 2005, and has become known for its daring use of colour, unabashed femininity, modern distinctive cuts, and deep connection to the art world. Her clients have included Michelle Obama, Catherine, Princess of Wales, Lady Gaga, Gillian Anderson, Tilda Swinton, Emily Blunt, and Gwyneth Paltrow, a roster that speaks to the breadth and endurance of her appeal. She has collaborated with the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, curated a contemporary art sale with Sotheby’s, and created a capsule with Malaika and The Outnet in support of girls’ education in the DRC.
Her accolades include Red Carpet Designer of the Year at the Fashion Awards in 2012, Designer of the Year at the Elle Style Awards in 2013, and British Designer of the Year in 2016. Most recently, she dressed stars from the Royal Ballet for the world premiere of Valentino Zucchetti’s “Prima” at the Royal Opera House, a fitting collaboration for a designer who has always treated fashion as a fine art.
